Xin-liang Ma
Thomas Jefferson University, USA
Xinliang (Xin) Ma received his MD degree in 1982 and Ph.D. degree in 1988. Following his postdoctoral training from 1989 to 2002 in the Department of Physiology at Thomas Jefferson University, he was recruited to the Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor in 1993. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine in 1997 and Tenured Professor in Emergency Medicine and Medicine in 2002. Dr. Ma’s research primarily focuses on the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury and ischemic heart failure. Over the past two decades, his team has concentrated on elucidating the role of adipose tissue-heart communications in diabetic cardiovascular complications. They are among the pioneering groups that initially reported the cardioprotective effect of adiponectin, making significant contributions to the field. His recent work underscores the importance of exosome-mediated crosstalk between adipocytes and cardiomyocytes in the development and progression of heart failure. His research endeavors have been consistently supported by multiple NIH R01s since 1998. Dr. Ma’s prolific academic output includes more than 280 original research papers, with 35 publications in Circulation, the flagship journal of the American Heart Association. His work has garnered more than 39,000 citations from other investigators in the field, earning him an h-index of 85. Dr. Ma has garnered several prestigious awards, including the Excellent Cardiovascular Research Award from the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the AHA BCVS Council.
