Dr. May Wu is a pioneering figure in Hong Kong's optometry profession.
⦿ In the 1980s, she was among the few optometrists who returned to
Hong Kong from Canada, bringing her expertise to a field that was then largely unrecognized
⦿ She dedicated herself to education, teaching at The Hong Kong
Polytechnic University (PolyU) throughout the 1980s and 1990s and playing a key role in establishing early connections between PolyU's School of Optometry and the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre.
⦿ Dr. Wu was deeply involved in the professional community, joining the Hong Kong Society of Professional Optometrists (HKSPO) in 1983 with the clear goal of uniting the profession.
⦿ Her leadership was recognized when she served as President of the HKSPO (1989-1990) and she continues to support the society today as an Honorary Member and Advisor.
⦿ She also served as the Immediate Past President of The Eye Foundation. A pivotal moment in her career was her work on the Supplementary
Ordinances in the early 1980s, a complex but unifying effort that ultimately led to the formal registration of optometrists in 1996, cementing the profession's status in Hong Kong
