Liangxue Lai earned his PhD at Northeast Agricultural University in 1995. In 1998, he went to the University of Missouri in the United States for postdoctoral research and became a research assistant professor in 2002. In July 2007, he was appointed as a principal researcher at the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was selected for the "Hundred Talents Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr Lai is the principal investigator of the National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863) and the Chief Scientist of a National Major Basic Research Development Plan (973) project as well as two projects of National key R&D programs. He is also a recipient of the Outstanding Young Overseas Chinese Fund. He has been conducting research on stem cells, transgenic large animals, and animal cloning. He has published over 190 papers in SCI journals including high profile ones such as Science, Nature Biotechnology, Cell, and Cell Stem Cell, with over 14,000 citations in total and a single paper being cited over 1600 times. As of now, his team has produced more than 100 kinds of genetically modified large animals including pigs, dogs and rabbits with important applications in biomedicine and agriculture.
